Charlie Parr plays and sings in a Country Blues style that died out many decades ago. I only hear these kinds of songs on the Harry Smith compilations so its really great that someone is revitalising this largely forgotten style. He lives in Duluth, Minnesota where he spends much of his time working with the homeless people there. This is what gives him his fuel for the misery and pain that line many of his songs. The song Reverend Evictions Blues is about a man Charlie used to talk to everyday who kept getting thrown out of everywhere he went. This, like many of the stories in this collection take their inspiration from the downtrodden folk in Duluth as apposed to the 1920s depression saturated midwest and deep south of America when this music took its hold, and downtrodden was the norm. All the songs on this album, (his third I think) are written by Parr with the exception of Worries Blues and Miners Lament which are traditional songs that he has adapted. Im a a bit of a sucker for the old time American music, awash with slide guitar and banjo, and this stuff hits the mark. We can be grateful that in our modern times were not suffering a depression like the one from the 1920s, and we can also be grateful that some people are still playing the music. Charlie Gower

| noWax events are friendly events where people come together to share music. The nights are eclectic to say the least, so leave any judgements at the door along with any attitude. Every noWax is different and the vibe is usually dictated by the host and punters. If you want to play, just take a ticket from the host and wait your turn. Lately some noWaxes have got quite busy so if you want to guarantee your slot get there early. Lastly, as the sound systems in some venues vary, a good thing to do is to boost the volume of your MP3 player so you know it'll be loud enough. You can find your own software updates and hacks on the web but we've included a couple here for iPods that we know work. For OSX or Windows | | |
