History

We started noWax on a whim back in 2003. It took off quite sharply and took us a little by surprise.

People all over the place started wanting to put on their own one, so we let them.

All the other hosts called it noWax and we put their nights on the one website and did mail-outs announcing the next parties.

We started writing about digital music in a weekly newsletter which got up to a subscription level of 2,500

Songbird Singing Away

Songbird looks to be pretty special. It’s a piece of software that has been build by some clever folk in San Francisco where it seems all clever Internet applications and software are built. This service is basically an amalgamation of iTunes and the Internet, a music blog aggregator and a bunch of other things I don’t have names for.

Songbird

Just like iTunes, Songbirdnest lets you search your own personal music library, but it does a whole lot more. You can also search music blogs you have saved and view them as you would in any kind of blog aggregator. Most interestingly you can view the music tracks on the blog within the music player and play any of them at will - if you like one you can even drag it into your library to hang onto. There are multi-media search engines such as Singing Fish and social sites like LastFM built in as well.

I’m told Songbird still has a few bugs, but it looks well thought out and pretty damn functional. I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of these music player / Internet search mash-ups in the near future. If you’re keen to find out more it’s worth watching the instructional video on the Songbird site - that’ll give you a good idea of what this baby can do!
