Sony Raids The Penny Jar
By Charlie | December 22nd, 2006 in News |The name Sony has recently been associated with a number of…fuck ups. So just to round off the year they thought they’d try and repair some of the costly damage. Sony BMG this time. Sony you may remember had some rootkit CDs that were released in 2005. These CDs when placed inside your computer would start running processes which are invisible to your computer, essentially spyware. These rootkits open up holes in your operating system which make it easy for viruses to get in. Not too bright. Lots of people in America got pretty upset. They have settled with 39 states paying $4.25m and then also paying $750k to California and Florida. On top of this they have to pay any user who can prove that computer was damaged the sum of $175. Sony, you silly billy.
